Fraction or Decimal
By tradition UK bookies have stated the odds in fractions. For example 7/1, 2/1 etc. What this means is that if you bet £10 on a horse which is 6/1 and it wins you receive back £60 in winnings plus your original stake back, a total of £70

So far that's easy enough to follow. But there are a lot more fractions that bookies use. Lets take another common one, 9/2. All you need to do is to divide 9 by 2 which is 4.5. So for a £10 bet on a winner would return £45 plus your £10 stake which would be £55. You can find a complete list of the fractions used by bookies and their decimal equivalents here

However some bookies are starting to use decimal odds. For example 8.0 or 4.0 etc. Much easy to calculate your winnings. If you bet £10 on a horse which is 7.0 and it wins you get back £70 but unlike fractional odds this does include your stake.

Therefore 3/1 is not equivalent to 3.0. 3/1 is in fact equivalent to 4.0 and 6/1 is equivalent to 7.0 etc.
